The Third International EBASI Conference was held 10-14 August 1998 in Gaborone, Botswana. EBASI was the sponsor and principal organizer of the conference. The primary financial supporter of the conference was ICTP along with the government of Botswana and a number of local institutions in Botswana. The conference was hosted by the University of Botswana (Department of Physics) and by SAPAM. So important were the mission and goals of the conference to the host country, that the Honorable Festus G. Mogae, President of the Republic of Botswana, opened the conference. President Mogae and Prof. Miguel A. Virasoro, the Director of ICTP, were cited as Distinguished Patrons of EBASI. The 3rd Conference brought together scientists of 14 nationalities. Nearly 50 papers were presented on topics including state-of-the-art research in science and technology, science and technology policy in Africa, science education issues, and applications of electric power generation using solar energy.
